TV Tuesday: Pinching Pennies

Laptop-TV combo with DVDs on top and smartphone on the desk

A recent article talks about the financial crisis in British TV. U.S. streamers also spent more lavishly on TV shows 5 years ago than they are now, with some shows never even being shown to an audience.

Are there things you would miss if budgets ended up being cut 30% or more from what we've seen in recent years? What sort of programming might you miss?

jesus christ I'm almost 40

Random login go!

I deleted Twitter because of course I did. I am on bluesky now (https://bsky.app/profile/waketosleep.bsky.social) and I actually post a fair amount there? Back on my microblogging bullshit, I guess.

You're more likely to keep up with my doings on AO3 than here at this point, but fannishly: I've posted 230k words of fanfic in the last 3 years! The amount I've WRITTEN far exceeds that. I'm a machine. A machine that's writing a lot of Yakuza old man yaoi. But that is only one of nine different fandoms I've written fic for in that time. I wrote like five fics for Trigun Stampede. Finally getting into Trigun fandom after loving it since I was a teenager was wholesome.

I basically don't watch TV or movies anymore, couldn't tell you why. Just stopped, that's all (although I did watch TriStamp and I've seen some other random stuff here and there). I've been meaning to watch s2 of Severance though and it's on the Plex server I'm subscribed to so I might get on that soon, at least.

I do play video games still. I remain subscribed to FF14 and do a lot of high end raiding now. Once you get a good regular group for that shit (and I have one), it's pretty fun. I played like half of FF16; might finish it sometime. I have played almost every Yakuza game at this point. I think there's like four I haven't played still. Five if we're counting Lost Judgment. I'd like to play Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 since nobody shuts up about it but my PC can't handle it until I replace the processor and mobo, so lol. Maybe someday.

Work-wise, I've been in solo practice now for... a year and a half? Thereabouts. Never going back to being employed by someone else, I don't think. Money is tight but I stay busy and the ability to decide how much I work and how much money I make is helping my health some, which is really all I can ask. Got several matters in early litigation right now, we'll see which ones make it to trial. Probably more than one. I need to figure out how to serve a claim in Michigan soon.

I had to move last year (same city, different neighbourhood) but I like my new place quite a bit. It's very cool in here in July. I'm trying out growing flowers from the ground again in my little patio area outside, although I started them late and from seeds so we'll see how they do. Some are perennials, so fingers crossed they try again next year. If not, I'll try starting them sooner and see if that helps.

Penguin is DC's Andor

When person after person said they watched Penguin even when it was uncomfortable to keep going with it, it sounded rather familiar. I saw it with The Wire and especially with S2 of Andor. These were stories exploring the failures of systems, their purposes sabotaged by failing to account for personal agendas and human nature.

To me, Penguin and Andor share other similarities of the "it's so well written I had to see more" variety. Both are shows set within a franchise that do not feature the main features of that franchise, and which deal with the ruthlessness of societies in recognizable and everyday ways. Read more... )

In a side note, for those wanting more DC discussion, check out [community profile] gotham_tv for commentary on that show.

TV Tuesday: Is That Still You?

Laptop-TV combo with DVDs on top and smartphone on the desk

There have been discussions about how natural actors do and don't look and how there are different standards across countries in terms of appearance. Do you see this as a problem, in that older people are particularly affected, or is it part of the fantasy of fiction that people in stories be unusually attractive?

Sunshine Revival #5: Music for People Who Believe in Love

Music_for_People_Who_Believe_in_Love_cover_art.png

Let me take this opportunity to tell you about my favorite album of the year (so far): Music for People Who Believe in Love (released May 23, 2025). This is the second solo album from Joe Jonas (the last one was in 2011) and this one is a stark departure from Fastlife. Every song feels so unique and heartfelt, and I think the lyrics showcase Joe's storytelling ability. I went through every emotion listening to this whole album, from dancing (only love) to laughing (Sip your wine) to crying (My Own Best Friend) to swooning (heart by heart). He's credited with writing 12 of the 14 tracks, which speaks to just how personally invested he is in this album. Three singles were released from the album: Work It Out, What This Could Be, and Heart by Heart. They are all worth a listen.

Hey Beautiful is obviously about his daughters, and it's such a sweet and lush song. He collaborated with his youngest brother Frankie on the dance-y track Velvet Sunshine that's not my favorite but it's still fun and slightly manic. Work It Out seems to be about his divorce from Sophie Turner, and I like the introspection in the lyrics and the way he doesn't shy away from calling himself out - he specifically mentions his depression/mental health struggles. You Got the Right makes me smile because I think the turn of phrase is very clever. To me, it captures how it feels once you fall in love and you're at that person's mercy. You don't have control over your feelings, even if they don't feel the same, and there's an inherent beauty in that - unrequited love is still something special.

My two favorite tracks under the cut )

Sunshine Revival #3

For [community profile] sunshine_revival challenge three: What are your favorite summer-associated foods?

This question makes me think of the fair and how much I loved going every year and eating all the fair food. I'm glad I got to go with my daughter this year and share a bit of that nostalgia with her. My favorite go-tos are corn dogs and a giant brick of curly fries like this one. I always loved the cinnamon roll booth but they weren't around this year. A new dessert truck was there, and their strawberry cinnamon roll was actually very good so I'll have to make that a new tradition.

In general, I associate summer with grilling burgers!! My sister's onion and mustard smash burgers are incredible. I also love making grilled zucchini and corn on the cob.

---

I haven't been able to watch much TV lately, but I saw Kpop Demon Hunters and it was so much fun! The songs are really catchy. The lore and the found family aspects are great, and I loved the animation style and costumes. Mira is my favorite character. But the conflict between Rumi and her adopted mother was so so relatable and heartbreaking. The final song is SO good, but here's a pretty spoiler-free music video to my second favorite song, Golden.

Jack looked from the intern picture to Robby again, rubbing a tired hand over his eyes. "Jesus, this is like a recipe." He gestured between the picture and Robby, young and old. "It's like twink plus seasoning equals daddy. Fuck," he said, a kind of helpless note to it. Then he walked out, like he hadn't just dropped a bomb on Robby's head.

What did that mean?
